Postal Index Number


A Postal Index Number or Pincode or PIN is a code in the post office numbering system used by Indian Postal Services admin. The Pin Code is six digits long and the PIN (Postal Index Number) was introduced on 15 August 1972.


There are 9 PIN zones in India, including 8 regional zones and 1 functional zone (for the Indian Army). The first digit of the PIN code points the region. The second digit points the sub-region, and the third digit points the categorized district within the region and the final three digits are allocated to individual post offices.

The 9 PIN zones covering the Indian states and union territories are as follows:
  1. Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Chandigarh
  2. Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand

  4. Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Goa and Chhattisgarh
  5. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
